Venturer Scouts Award Scheme

This is a quick overview of the Award scheme for Venturers. Although it can look a bit overwhelming in the Venturer Scout Record Book, it’s a lot easier than it appears when it’s shown as a mind map.

Why Participate in the Venturer Scout Award Scheme?
Because it’s easy, it’s fun, and you learn a heap of new skills that prepare you for later on in life! Even if you just achieve a just a few of these activities, imagine how this will look when you apply for a job one day – compared to someone who hasn’t done any of these activities!

Here’s a brief summary of how the scheme works:

There are 3 major awards that you can aim for, the highest is the Queen Scout Award. The others are the Venturer Award and Endeavour award.

Queens Scout Award
Achieve the ultimate in Venturing! Complete all 13 activities in maroon, and any 4 green activities (1 from each area).

Venturer Award
Complete the maroon Unit Management, Initiative, Ideals, Environment and First Aid and any two others.

Endeavour Award
You need to complete your Venturer Award, and the associate green (QS) award of your chosen activity that you specialise in for more than 50 hours.

The diagram above was made with mind mapping software called Freemind. It’s a great tool for planning, or structuring your ideas – or your life. You can get your free software from here It’s really easy to use, and there are heaps of tutorials on YouTube.

Thanks, Mazza

Cycling Over The Harbour Bridge!!

Mount Colah Mount Kuring Gai Venturers are in for a great night tonight!! We’ll be joining about 200 other cyclists and riding over the Harbour Bridge! This is an event that we participate in every year, that’s organised by Critical Mass.

On the last Friday of every month, in hundreds of cities worldwide, cyclists, bladers and boarders meet for a rolling celebration of non-motorised transport. It’s a welcoming space where people feel safe. Here’s a photo taken from our ride last year. Stay tuned for more in a few days!!!

After our ride to North Sydney, we’ll ride back to China Town, and have a big feast for a few dollars, before boarding the train and heading home again! How’s that for an alternative to watching tv and eating pizza!!

Geoff goes Walkabout!

One of our very special people has left our ranks. Our long serving Venturer Leader, Geoff Tosio, is living his dream with partner Kerry, on an indefinite wandering around Australia adventure and wherever else they may end up.

In the last news that we heard from Jeff, he was traveling through the wilds of Sumatra in Indonesia.

Geoff has been the backbone of the Mount Colah Mount Kuring Gai Venturer Unit for almost 8 years, and has truly set a shining example for the young men and women in his charge. He has been a source of inspiration and knowledge and his enthusiasm and rock craft knowledge were unsurpassed and a major part of the Venturer program.

Geoff will be sadly missed and we wish them all the best with their future travels.

MCMK Scout Group has a new Queens Scout

Extract above from the Bush Telegraph

Mount Colah Mount Kuring Gai Scout Group haveĀ  had a great year in terms of the quantity and quality of awards that we have seen presented to our youth members across all sections. This, of course, has been capped off so well by one of our Venturers, Josef Urmenyhazi, who became a Queens Scout in February. Josef is the first Queens Scout for our Group for about 10 years. This has been a huge achievement for Josef, and it is one that he will carry forward on his sleeve, on his CV, and in his confidence for the rest of his life.

Josef Urmenyhazi, 18, from Mt Colah/Mt Ku-ring-ai Venturers, was presented with the highest Venturer award by NSW Governor Professor Marie Bashir last month.

He became the first Scout in the Mt Colah/Mt Ku-ring-ai group to earn the top honour in 10 years.

ā€œSome people think being a Scout is all about tying knots or helping old ladies cross the road,ā€ Josef said.

To earn the award he had to undergo various activities with Venturers (a group for those aged 14-18 years).

These ranged from group expeditions in the bush, kayaking on Hawkesbury River, undertaking leadership roles, and completing a first aid course. And he had to do it by his 18th birthday – which proved somewhat problematic.

ā€œIt was a bit tricky, especially since my 18th birthday was the day before the HSC started,ā€ he said.

ā€œIn the end it was a relief because there was a lot of work involved.ā€

The first year medical science student said he would not be the confident person he was if not for his Scouting experiences.

ā€œI pushed myself to the limits at times. It makes you do things you wouldn’t do normally,ā€ he said.

His Scouting career also gave him opportunities to travel and introduced him to outdoor rockclimbing.

VENTOUT = Venturers + Scouts!!!

Wow! What an awesome weekend! The Scouts and Venturers from Mount Colah Mount Kuring Gai teamed up for an amazing weekend at Ventout located at Camp Kuring Gai on the Hawkesbury River.

Our buddies at Berowra helped out, and the Leaders and Venturers made sure that the Scouts had a great introduction into Venturing!

Although it was a very hot weekend (36 degrees!) there were plenty of water activities to keep us cool! Being towed behind the speed boat was the highlight for most Scouts and Vennies. The disco was a hit as well, although it was a little too loud. Those who wanted to relax in a quieter environment could chill out at the movies.

Ventout is one of the highlight of the Scouting calendar. I’m sure all of us will be doing it again same time next year!!!

MCMK Venturer T-Shirts

MCMK Venturers are commited to you looking your very best!

All Venturers in the Mount Colah Mount Kuring Gai Scout group receive these two awesome t-shirts. The light coloured t-shirt is for smart casual day wear and getting mud and crap all over it.

On the other hand, our limited edition black and terrifying, biker styled t-shirt is for evening wear. It’s perfect for getting stained and dirty. Give your mum a break! Why wash it?

Greetings from MCMK Venturers!

It’s been a MASSIVE year so far!

MCMK Venturers have had a very full program this year!! To quickly summarise, the year kicked off with; a Snowy Mountains Bushwalk, a Brooklyn Dam camp, Roventure, Dragonskin, camping at the Tanks and Wannawang, bike hikes in the Blue Mountains, Urban Caving, Amazing Race in the city, fishing, and heaps of BBQ’s!

We currently have ten Venturers, including four girls! I’m sure we’re still growing as we now have a presence on Facebook, so lots of like-minded teens now know who we are and some of the activities we participate in. Check out our facebook page to see the latest on what we’re up to: http://www.facebook.com/mcmkvents We’re always keen on new Venturers, and we welcome parents to lend the occasional hand!

Although we enjoy sharing activities with the Berowra Venturers, it will be nice to have a place called home. I’m sure we will still maintain our joint activities with Berowra, and once we do have our new hall, it would be nice to reciprocate the generosity offered by them.

Although it’s been a big year, it ain’t over yet! Here are just some of the things that we’ve done this term!
– Can collecting to help with the overs
– Our own YouTube Film Festival night
– Calabash Castle Hike (sleeping in haunted ruins!)
– City Photo Scavenge Hunt
– Ventout – where we hang out with the Scouts, swim and speedboat

We still have these activities to do before the end of the year…
– Cycling over the Harbour Bridge
– Manly Waterworks
– Deep Pass Xmas Camp: Caving, swimming, exploring
– and the big end of year party!!!

So, as you can see, we’re a very active bunch! All the best to the rest of the Group and to the families who support us! We’ll see you all soon – in the new hall!!!

Cheers, Mazi

Mount Colah Mount Kuring Gai Venturer Leader
